The UK Chart for 2004

The Way Foward

Mundane astrology is the about the study of nations and groups. All nations have their own horoscopes, their "moment of birth" and the UK is no exception. The usual chart selected is that of the implementation of the Act of Union in 1701 AD. There are others. The data is for London, 00.00hrs, 1st January 1701, giving an Ascendant of 7 degees, 6 minutes of Libra. Traditionally, transits and pogressions are applied to the mundane chart.

The chart on this page is for the moment of entry into 1st January, 2003 at London. I am interested in studying such charts as a "year chart" for a nation. Equally, it can be applied to the UK mundane chart in the form of transits for the date and time given, though some of the slower-moving planets will have much longer effects .

So what might this year chart tell us about the coming year for the UK?

The first thing to note is that the Sun, representing the head of the nation, is conjunct Venus and the IC and is opposite Jupiter in the tenth house. In a national chart Venus may be the bringer of harmony, especially through cultural activities. Jupiter is the point at which common values and beliefs are sought. Jupiter in the tenth house is concerned with the structure of government and national prestige. As there is an opposition between the Sun and Jupiter there may be difficulties in ensuring that a common bond develops between the government and the people. There may be an attempt to divert people's interest away from problems of policy by providing or encouraging entertainment - the preparations for the Queen's jubilee spring to might.

Policy issues which might prove problematic this year may involve the financial institutions and the increasing differences between the rich and the poor in the UK. That the trades union might be implicated in this scenario is indicated by Mars in the sixth house trining Jupiter. Since the beginning of the year there have already been indications that the some members of trade union movement are already less than enthusiatic about present government policies. The recent unrest about the state of the nation's railways is a case in point.

Mars this year is in an interesting sector of the nation's chart. It is square to Saturn in the ninth house and Pluto in the third house, as well as trine Jupiter. There may be further cuts in sectors of the education budget and in the health budget as a result. This may well prove the cause for further reaction from the public and the trade union movement.

The Moon, too, is in the tenth house and in mutable Gemini. Voters may well find that there is more than one policy option on the table and may feel that only superficial rememdies are being applied to national ills. They may feel, with the Moon opposing Mercury and Neptune in the fourth house, that necessary changes in policy are not happening quickly enough and that they have been let down by present policy makers. There are indications, with the Moon in Gemini, that this could apply particularly to the education sector.

Issues with foreign policy are likely to present problems this year, particularly with Saturn in the ninth house. There may be an attempt to divert public interest away from home affairs by concentrating on areas of the world which are at war. These may not be successful. The indications are that there may have to be cut backs in involvement in issues abroad, or that firm measure need to be taken with foreign nations which are misusing their powers. In the former case, Afghanistan has already made a plea for more investment to be made available to rebuild the country; the UK government has made no formal reply to this. In the latter case, it will be interesting to see what line the UK government takes in response to the elections in Zimbabwe.

Overall, the chart indicates that some quite decisive actions will need to be taken by the government but that these will cause dissent both at home and, possibly, abroad.
